CD album "The Hampstead Sketchbook":
|
AUTUMN is celebrating its jubilee!
[...] AUTUMN is celebrating their 30th anniversary by this “The
Hampstead Sketchbook”. [...] The work consists of a selection of songs
that have been taken from their discography and recorded by the live
line-up [...]. This album is an opportunity to go back in time and to
rediscover songs from early cassettes like “And The Tress Will Welcome
You Again” and “Wings Are Growing”. The songs were played in a mature
way while a kind of cinematographic impression comes through. It all
sounds sweet and delicate while inviting the listener to dream away.
Some of the songs remind me a bit of the early work of Endraum and I
especially enjoyed “Sky Eye”. A song like “Cairo” reveals the spirit of
distant times although it’s a song that was originally released in 2001
on the “Fragments From Utopia”-album. It reveals a more electro-minded
and ambient side of the band, which I personally prefer. The dreamy
side comes through a climax at “Pond”, which is without a shadow of a
doubt one of the main attention grabbers of this work…
Side-Line (Belgium)
…the interlude is fantastic, and AUTUMN equally stunning in the softly stirring “Svoboda“…

CD album "Fleeting Impressions":
|
AUTUMN is back
with the final part of their “Embracing Worlds”-trilogy, which started
in 2004 (cf. “Sulamith & Maria”) and continued in 2008 (cf.
“Eurasia”). Both previous albums were a quite fascinating sonic travel
throughout different cultures and musical ideas. [...] The album is
described as a kind of voyage reassembling impressions gathered on the
way through Europe, always going eastward up to the gateways into Asia,
deeper and deeper into the conflict-scarred border regions between the
Western and Eastern world. Speaking for myself I like this kind of
concept revealing a real human and warm attitude about the world we’re
living in. AUTUMN already accomplished this work with an entire arsenal
of musicians and members playing acoustic instruments next to
electronics. The instruments inject an authentic aspect to the world,
which was also one of the main strengths of their previous work. The
music sounds like an offspring between gothic reverie and ethereal
passages while the magic of clarinet and cello remain a typical
characteristic of their composition. You feel like you are embarked on
a journey visiting different countries and cultures [...]. I’m here
referring to “Mostar” for its darker aspect and great clarinet playing.
I also like the kind of spooky vocals running through this song. “From
Piran To Perast” is for sure the absolute highlight for its kind of
tribal input, which injects a mysterious touch to the work. This is for
sure the kind of song showing the real potential of AUTUMN [...].
Notice by the way that this album features 21 songs. The titles mainly
refer to different places in Europe, which often stands for magic and
reverie...

CD album "Magenta Emerald II - III":
|
Autumn has been active for nearly 30 years.
The German band from Nuernberg can look back on an impressive
discography featuring several hidden and forgotten jewels of
neo-classic refinement. The influences of the band have been described
as, “Its aim is synthesis of the arts by combining music, fine arts and
literature using avant-garde, traditional and classical elements of
various cultural complexes.”
“Magenta Emerald II – III” is the successor to “Magenta Emerald I:
Crisis” released in 2005 by Nova Tune. This album is the final chapter
of a trilogy about a journey into the psyche and its contents are
orientated to the concept of development novels of the idealism:
Different layers of personalities, emotional worlds and live models are
merged in one fictional person, who is developing by the search for
sense - but here contrary to the classical examples without the goal of
a morally defined and precise ideal.
Musically Autumn remains faithful to its delicate formula and their
passion for neo-classic music. The clarinet is one of the main
instruments on “Magenta Emerald II – III”... . Autumn fully achieved a
few noticeable songs. “Admiration – Scene 2” is a noticeable cut for a
kind of neo-classic and lounge mix. This track has a kind of surprising
lounge appeal, which is fully original because of its neo-classic
basis. Another remarkable song is “Crystallization – Scene 1”, which
sounds fresh and a bit ethereal-pop minded. But this album first of all
remains a kind of sound ocean leading the listener into evasive
moments. The vocals are accentuating the ethereal character of the
music, which has been often quite typical for Autumn.

CD album "Parzival":
|
“Parzival” is inspired on the famous medieval
poem by Wolfram von Eschenbach. The story and myth of Parzival brings
us back to the middle ages, the time of the knights and the famous
quest for the grail. Parzival has inspired multiple artists, but I’ll
always associate it by the work and bombast compositions of Richard
Wagner.
Autumn’s “Parzival” interpretation is one made of neo-classic
influences and the passion for acoustic and authentic instruments.
Clarinet, bagpipes, cello, guitar, but also electronics are creating
the world of “Parzival”. Brigitte Christine Tretter is the narrator.
The music often leads you into reverie, but a few darker and martial
drum sections bring us back to reality. “Parzival” is also made of
mysterious spheres and perfectly fit to the esoteric aspect of the
grail (cf. “Der Gral”).
The work is filled with delicacy. The love for acoustic instruments
reminds me of bands like Love Is Colder Than Death, Lycia a.o. … .
Autumn revisited the universe of Parzival in a sweet and evasive style.
… Autumn remains a very interesting project dealing with an artistic
music style that could be used for ballet.

CD album "Eurasia":
|
AUTUMN is a German band we here at Side-Line
have known for quite a long time. I've never understood why some bands
in their genre got major label deals while AUTUMN always remained in
the shadows. They're definitely not less talented and that's why
they'll appeal for a wider audience of music lovers being familiar with
labels like Prikosnovénie, Projekt or yet Kalinkaland. "Eurasia" comes
3 years after the "2 Decades"-album and is the 2nd chapter from the
"Embracing Worlds Trilogy". The album "Sulamith & Maria" released
in 2004 was the first part from this concept. AUTUMN again brings a
meeting of European and Asian cultures. The main idea behind "Eurasia"
is to lay emphasis on the indivisibility of both cultural complexes as
it is well founded in the union both continents are forming. Musical
wise this ideas have been transposed into neo-classical and ethereal
influences. AUTUMN remains quite faithful to their stylish composition
using numerous authentic and acoustic instruments like cello, clarinet,
bagpipes, guitar, bass guitar, tenor sax, tin whistle ea. The soprano
vocals of Brigitte Christine Tretter remains another main force of
AUTUMN. She has a large impact on the songs and her way of singing on
the "Die Wolken sich nun abwärts jagen"-song even reminds me of Qntal.
This song is also one of the absolute attention grabbers from the
"Eurasia"-trip. The neo-classical style mixed with the ethereal
influences sounds fluent and consistent. A few more songs are
accentuating the world of reverie created by AUTUMN. It all sounds far
away from the hostility between different cultures, and seems clearly
to appeal for a better world. The clarinet took a very important part
in the writing of this album. It's an instrument we're not that used to
hearing, but it brings a nice twist with the other and more familiar
instruments like cello or guitar. But AUTUMN isn't always deliver that
'happy'-sound. "Prospero"-cut is a real moody passage that seems to
evoke a deep sadness. The reverie style comes back alive on the real
nice-crafted and instrumental "L'Esprit De La Méditerrannée". You here
can discover a nice twist between piano and clarinet parts while some
noises of birds in the background are giving you the impression of
liberty and total harmony with nature. "Eurasia" is also one of the
most diversified albums from AUTUMN. The "Odâ Lui Eminescu"-song is a
very cool illustration from this wider spectrum of influences. This
song is more into a kind of ambient, dreamy ambient style while we here
get male vocals instead of Miss Tretter. I also have to mention an
important detail about the tracklist where you can find back some
"Intermezzo"-parts. It's all about a choice, but I personally regret
that they haven't made one full song from the ideas reassembled in the
6 intermezzos. I'm not saying that this is the best AUTUMN-release to
date (the band having released an impressive number of productions for
so far), but it's definitely one of the most achieved and mature
productions to date. There's no doubt about it, experience is all about
a growing process and AUTUMN has reached a very qualitative state here.
Side-Line (Belgium)

sello argentino Karma Records.
Tretter (vocalista), Kathrin Koller (flauta y coros), Sabine
Kronmeister (flautas), Matthias Reinwald (clarinete), Florian Zeilhofer
(cello), Bernd Baumeister (guitarras), Thomas Buchner (coros y
teclados) y Christian Roth (bases y percusiones).

DCD album "2 Decades":
|
The German Autumn is a band I'm keeping an eye
on since their early years. The sound has considerable evolved
throughout the years to reach a refined neo-classical approach on their
last releases. "2 decades" sounds like a deeper exploration and
fascination for a sensitive and artistic approach, but also a kind of
look back to some essential elements of earlier releases. Autumn became
a quite mature band, which slowly moves on in a sound filled with
prosperity and like an ode to elements of nature. The neo-classical
input and the magic vocal parts of Brigitte Christine Tretter became
the main force of this collective. The 1st disc of "2 decades"
perfectly stands for this description. This disc has been set up in 6
chapters, forming a kind of guide line and concept in the evolution of
the songs. The "Tarnished mirror"-song (extract from the 2nd chapter)
is a little jewel for expressing such an enlightening sensation of
artistic freedom! The 2nd disc is a kind of bonus featuring 8 pieces
that have been composed and played in different theatres and galleries
during the past 20 years. This disc reveals a quite hidden part of
Autumn, which is definitely more soundtrack like. There's a kind of
serenity running through the songs (which are quite longer), but
written in a more ambient approach. The pieces are definitely suited
for a kind of soundtrack and/or imaginary vision. This is an excellent
surprise only reinforcing my support for a band, which for sure
deserves much more recognition! This is for sure a band that will
please to fans of labels like Prikosnovénie and other Projekt.

zuletzt "Further And Further On" markieren die Eckpunkte der
Neudefinition dessen, was Autumn ausmacht.

This EP is the 1st part from 2 that comes to
celebrate the 20th anniversary of the German Autumn collective. They
became quite productive since they started exploring more neo-classical
fields so this production is one more to complete an already impressive
discography. The songs got the titles of the spring and summer months
while the 2nd EP will be devoted to the other seasons. The 6 songs
again reveal a musical universe full of serenity, which moves into a
neo-classical fantasy. The "Marto" and "Majo" songs (months) are my
personal ones. An interesting concept for a pleasant listening!
Side-Line (Belgium)
This is the 2nd and final chapter of 2
conceptual releases based on the 4 seasons. The autumn and winter are
musically speaking evolving in a similar line as the spring and the
summer. Autumn already composes meaningful neo-classical impressions
with the superb vocals of Brigitte Christine Tretter. The use of a few
classical instruments like the clarinet injects a feeling of
authenticity in the work of this band. I personally prefer the 1st
chapter, but both together for sure stands for a compact and enjoyable
production!

Trinity (France)
Kaum zu glauben, dass es das Nürnberger
Künstlerkollektiv Autumn schon seit zwanzig Jahren gibt ! Leider

AUTUMN alias
Brigitte Christine Tretter (Vocals), Bernd Baumeister (Gitarre), Thomas

CD album "Magenta Emerald - I: Crisis":
|
seinem Album "Magenta Emerald 1: Crisis": Fast wissenschaftlich geht
Sonic Seducer (Germany)
While the "Sulamith & Maria"-album is
still warm from the pressing, Autumn already launched a next
full-length. "Magenta Emerald" is all about a concept concerning the
inner world and the human psyche. They for a while go on with the
neo-classical influence of their previous album, but you directly feel
that this is something different. Different elements of different
styles already meet each other, but the neo-classical impression for
sure rules over compositions full of sadness where other influences
like medieval, folk and deep melancholic music add a bonus. Different
classical instruments like flute, clarinet, bagpipes and cello have
been used while the female voice of a mezzo-soprano and a tenor only
accentuate the classical style. The cocktail of all these instruments,
singers and influences have been constantly recovered with some deep
feeling of sadness and darkness. I like the "Tear" and
"Vanishing"-songs while the more melodious "Finale" is my favorite one.
The songs have been classed in an ouverture, a prologue and 5 different
acts. This is the 1st chapter of a trilogy, so let's now await the 2nd
edition!
Side-Line (Belgium)
Estampie, Qntal und Dead Can Dance dürften hier durchaus etwas Feines
zu entdecken haben.
Zillo (Germany)

CD album "Sulamith & Maria":
|
It has been a while ago I heard some new work
of Autumn. This German collective already positively surprised me by
promising releases in the realm of gothic and neo-classical, but also
totally disappointed me by uninspired compositions. After all these
years, this album rises like a phoenix out of their ashes! "Sulamith
& Maria" is a kind of concept, meant to be the meeting between the
European and Asian cultures in times of terrorism! That's what they
illustrate by the use of lyrics inspired by old writings from Jalal
ad-Din Rumi and Hildegard von Bingen. Musically speaking, Autumn
delivers a mixture of neo-classical, medieval and Eastern influences.
It sounds a bit sad, but the main feeling emerging of their songs is
prosperity! They used different authentic instruments like flutes,
cellos, guitars… and even a didgeridoo. This is an album that you've to
enjoy as a compact entity, where different cultures are like embracing
each other instead of the atrocities we've used to! Good job guys!

Eine geheimnisvolle Aura liegt auf der neuen

Mystik, Melancholie und poetischem Gesang. Man schlägt den Bogen von
traditionellen Chorälen, New Age, Avantgarde über klassische Klänge.
Herbstlich.

Dead Can Dance, mal an die Legendary Pink Dots erinnert.

IN/OUT ", " ANTIGONE "...).

L'orchestra mitteleuropea dark Autumn guidata

Cori, flauti, sassofoni,
clarinetti, cornamuse, pianoforte, basso, chiatarre, percussioni, e
Doubts In Watercolour), a tratti inquietanti (Himmelwärts, La Reve De
Musica colta e
popolare allo stesso tempo, antica e moderna, oscura e solare, sacra e
profana. Consigliato a tutti gli appassionati dei Dead Can Dance.

CD album "Fragments From Utopia":
|
Eröffnet von der verträumten Piano-Ballade "As he opened the dorr the

Earlier Reviews
It's hard to describe the style of AUTUMN, but
once again their band name perfectly represents the mood of their work
- slow and dark ballads...
The choice of the name AUTUMN fits perfectly in with their music which
has a lot of common points with that dull but colourful season, not
warm nor cold...~ The compositions have evolved into a kind of
soundtrack style...giving you the feeling of being in front of a
melancholic movie...
A fascinating part...are the different instrumental cuts, which can be
used as soundtracks ~ They seem to belong to these Victorian movies
with Emma Thompson as the main artist, which create this similar
atmosphere where romanticism and melancholy melt together into a
strange union...
If you pay attention to concentrating on the music then maybe you will
see the illusion of dead leaves falling from the trees recovering the
earth with their red, brown and yellow colours - autumn has just
passing by! Each colour of these leaves can be linked to another
musical influence...~ The whole composition is a meaningful piece of
knowledge and intensity ~ Sadness turns over into a refined elegance
full of brilliant songs...
Soft, atmospheric, gloomy sounds..., very interesting! The alternation
of male and female vocals...deliver an interesting diversity...~ The
romantic aspect...is still omnipresent in their work, its softness and
purity is rather pleasant...~ Enter their romantic universe...
Once again diversified and fascinating from the very first note till
the last one!... This is a masterpiece!

Grundsätzlich sollte man diese AUTUMN nicht
mit...der gleichnamigen amerikanischen Band..., mit Thiemanns
Tess-Pflänzchen 'Autumn', verwechseln...~ Das Nürnberger Projekt
präsentiert mit 'The Past Twelve Years' eine beeindruckende Werkschau
an ursprünglich zwischen '84 und '96 auf Tape bzw. Vinyl
veröffentlichten Stücken, die die Frage aufwerfen, wieso AUTUMN so
lange der Öffentlichkeit verborgen blieb. 'The Past Twelve Years'
zukommt...~ 'The Past Twelve Years' erlebt zum Ende hin gar eine

sakrales Album, welches teilweise an 'Dead Can Dance' erinnert ~
Astan (Germany)
Sehr mystischer...Sound trifft sehr lyrische

Interviews (Excerpts)
When did AUTUMN form and what does it mean to you?… The project
has been active for quite some time now ~ How do you look back to all
those years?… Is it a way of life?
AUTUMN was founded in autumn 1984..., some of us, the founding members
of the project, met a long time ago at school, were we were playing in
a band together with some friends ~ After the split of that band we
decided to compose one song together a few month later, and during
those recordings we had a lot of talks regarding our views about music
and art ~ We discovered that we had developed our ideas and shared the
same opinion. We also had the plan to set emotions directly into some
medium by using now-a-day's technology ~ So we decided to combine
classical, avant-garde and synthesizer music ~ While organizing
performances we initiated a group of artists in those days, so AUTUMN
was founded ~ After a few songs AUTUMN became a collective, and we
included (and still do) a lot of guest musicians ~ The only
disadvantage is, that our current organization, I mean the way we work,
the changing of the instrumentation and personnel with every
composition, makes a tour nearly impossible now...~ There are also the
numerous vocalists; it's not the regular way and it's a little bit
dangerous not to have a red thread of one voice ~ A lead-singer has
it's advantages, but working with only one singer is like painting with
only one and always the same colour ~ We prefer different voices for
different expressions...
AUTUMN has really become a way of life ~ Music and art has always
played an important part for us and has influenced our daily life and
our relationships ~ AUTUMN has been a kind of personal philosophy since
its beginning ~ And it has remained a way of reflecting our own
experiences, a way of transposing very private feelings into something
universal which becomes understandable and which can be felt when you
listen.
Why did we have to wait for many years until the first CD release? We
think MCs were in the past a very direct way to reach people who are
interested in alternative music ~ Tape releases had the advantage to
act very spontaneous like drawing sketches, so there was no need for
another medium until the extreme expansion of CD-technology and the
conditions attaching thereto - for example the decay of that
alternative tape scene.
Why have you called the project AUTUMN? Autumn
is the season, in which AUTUMN was founded ~ And it is still the time,
which is renewing AUTUMN year by year in some way - which brings a very
impulsive creative power into our music ~ It is some kind of muse ~ And
this is not random, the reason for this is the character of that season
~ And AUTUMN is a replica of that dull but colourful season, not warm
nor cold - misty mornings, golden daylight and evenings full of
contemplation ~ Autumn is a time for reflection, a time for memories
and emotions ~ Just like the character of our music...~ Also the
principle of dualism, another characteristic of that season, plays some
role in the symbolism of the music and lyrics of AUTUMN, for example:
it is the key to the contents of many of our songs - conflict and inner
strife - and it is a method of composition too.
What inspires you, which topics are frequently used and how are
the lyrics written? And what is more important - lyrics or music ?
In the beginning there is always an experience ~ This is the
inspiration of both, music and lyrics ~ And the ideal is a composition,
which is a pure product of only one deep experienced emotional
impression, including all its associations, ideas, thoughts and
fantasies ~ After an expressive 'sketching' composing and arranging of
the words begin…~ Lyrics are in its first phase some kind of very
private notes like entries in a diary ~ The second step is the
transformation of those private thoughts into something universal, into
a sort of poetry ~ This is mostly a long and hard way…~ Lyrics and
music should form some kind of unity ~ They have to play different
parts, but none of them is more or is less important ~ Sometimes it
needs music and words to express the emotion, sometimes it's hard to
find words to translate the feelings into language, and the music shows
enough intensity to express and evoke.
Which are your main influences? ... What was for example the inspiration behind the album 'Taciturn Tales'? We
have been - and still are - influenced by everything which is
impressing us ~ Music of very different styles, as different as all the
musicians who are incorporated in AUTUMN ~ But we are not only
influenced by music, there are also other influences which have formed
our ideas and our style ~ For example romantic, symbolist, surrealist
and post-modern literature and paintings, but also films, especially
the works of Tarkowskij...~ 'Taciturn Tales' were the attempt at
writing psychic ballades ~ Ballades which have no real outer action,
but which tell an inner story ~ So the compositions were a step from
the instrumental AUTUMN compositions to ballades without being
narrative ~ The second principle was the way of writing the songs ~
Most melody sketches have been recorded at a series of walking-tours to
an isolated pond within a forest near to Nuernberg using a dictating
machine ~ And all basics of the lyrics are written at that pond,
sitting in the grass, looking to the reflecting water and noting the
flowing thoughts...
Is there a certain 'scene' which you would like to see AUTUMN associated?
We just address our releases to all people who are interested in our work, equal to which 'scene' they think to belong to.
